Delta Force: Black Hawk Down Soundtrack

March 9th, 2010

“Behind every great game is a compelling story and each part of what we do contributes to telling that story. In creating the musical score for Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, we strove to not only enhance the excitement of the game, but to depict the human plight of a nation torn by civil war, and honor our Soldiers who served with courage and distinction. I hope that the musical thoughts and emotions expressed in these 28 tracks will do just that,” says composer Russell Brower. Back in 2002, before he went on to head up the music of World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade and Starcraft II, Brower created this compelling soundtrack for the popular video game from Novalogic. With the help of Ron Fish (of God of War fame) and a number of authentic instruments like duduk, ney, o-phone, and drums all recorded live, this became one of his most memorable scores. This official CD release with its deluxe sleeve was only available for a short period of time direct from the publisher, and is almost impossible to find today.

BlizzCast Episode #13

Episode 13 of Blizzcast, Blizzard’s occassional podcast, came out yesterday. The majority of it is devoted to a StarCraft II beta special, which is beyond the scope of this site, but they did do a WoW Q&A after that (and a Diablo 3 Q&A at the end), between WoW CM Zarhym and Diablo CM Bashiok. The WoW segment was mostly retrospective, discussing what the developers learned from Wrath, with a dash of looking forward to Cataclysm.

Here’s a quick summary (you can read the whole transcript, or listen to the podcast, at Blizzard’s site):

  • ICC is designed such that the final boss in each section is harder than the rest of the section (Putricide, Blood Queen Lana’thel, Sindragosa, and the Lich King).
  • The ICC zone-wide buff “won’t come in until at least a month after the Lich King has been released,” which means we could see it soon, since the Lich King fight opened up February 2nd (although the devs mentioned in the Twitter chat that it’s not quite time for the buff yet). It will improve “roughly once a month,” and the buff will affect health, damage, and healing (much like the Luck of the Draw buff from random dungeon groups).
  • They thought the Illidan encounter in Black Temple, back in BC, was a bit anti-climactic, so they wanted to make sure the end of the Lich King was “super special.”
  • In answer to “what next after I clear ICC:” ICC hard modes, and to a lesser extent the Ruby Sanctum, which is coming in a future patch. Ruby Sanctum will hold “roughly Lich King level gear,” as has been mentioned elsewhere.

That’s about it for the WoW content, but if you’re interested in SC2 or D3, you may well want to read or listen to the whole thing.

Bobby Kotick didn’t think Blizzard was worth $7 million in ‘96

Have you ever looked at something new on the auction house and thought “Who would pay a thousand gold for that,” only to find that months later the item has skyrocketed in price and you missed a golden opportunity to pick it up on the cheap? Activision kingpin Bobby Kotick might make the same analogy. If he played video games, I mean.

The Escapist clued us in to this little story: back in 1995, Kotick was eating lunch with some folks from Davidson & Associates, and they told him that they had just bought up-and-coming software developer Blizzard Entertainment for the tidy sum of seven million dollars — a number that a baffled Kotick believed to be ridiculous. At the time, Blizzard’s claim to fame was Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans, and … that’s pretty much it, save for a few one-off games like Blackthorne and The Lost Vikings. Kotick called them nothing more than a “contract developer” and remarked that they weren’t worth seven million bucks.

Of course, later that year, Blizzard released Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, which catapulted them into gaming history forever. Thirteen years later, in 2008, Kotick (and Activision) paid seven billion dollars to acquire Blizzard. For those not into mathematics, that’s one thousand times more than what Davidson & Associates paid.

Well, he was right about one thing. They definitely weren’t worth seven million bucks. He just didn’t know how right he was at the time.

World of Warcraft Adventure Game

March 5th, 2010

World of Warcraft: the Adventure Game is an exciting and fast-paced journey through the world of Azeroth for 2 to 4 players. Choose your favorite hero and embark on an epic journey from humble beginnings to immense power, battling vicious monsters, powerful overlords, and your treacherous fellow players! Will you be the mightiest hero in all the land?

Customer Review: Different flavour than the big one. Still fun.
Having played (and enjoyed!) FFG’s other World of Warcraft boardgame (henceforth WoWBG) many times, we thought we’d give the Adventure Game version (henceforth WoWTAG) a try. It was a lot more just a pared down retranslation of the larger game; in fact, WoWTAG was an entirely different kind of game.

Both games tackle different aspects of the online game whose name they borrow. WoWBG fantastically implemented the different character classes: the feeling of leveling up characters, learning spells, and evolving one’s talent tree. Teamwork was also a big emphasis and mobs were all represented with little plastic figurines (or dolls, if you like). Questing, however, solely involved kill quests.

WoWTAG involves less of the minutiae of character management and focuses more on translating the feeling of Azeroth’s atmosphere. There are travel quests, kill quests, and pvp quests. And the rewards one picks up are much more diverse. The game uses a system of limiting one’s geographical boundaries based on one’s character’s level (much as the online game does) - we found this helpful for keeping us from biting off more than we can chew.

Having played all four character classes, we’re happy at how differently they play and yet how they really do seem to balance well. We’re looking forward to the release of other character packs as expansions next month–which we’re also hoping will allow us to bump the max number of players up from four to around six (four tends to limit who we can play with). WoWTAG also moves at a much quicker clip than WoWBG, which tends to bog down in later rounds when players become embroiled in much more complicated fights.

When comparing the two games, my wife (who’s never played the online game) prefers WoWTAG–as WoWBG is slightly more complicated than she’d prefer. I personally prefer WoWBG (though not by a huge margin) mostly because I really enjoy the character-building aspect of that game (and like putting together a nice frost mage or a feral durid!).

And of course, both of us prefer Puerto Rico! (but since you can’t always play the same game, both WoW boardgames have found happy places in our round of backups.

Customer Review: Thematically perfect, fun-factor flawed
As a former World of Warcraft player and a long-time board gamer, I was anxious to see how this more affordable, quicker version of the humongous World of Warcraft board game pared down. The box is awesome, the rules are tight, and the components are top notch when they are present. Present, you ask? Well, they decided to print the cards double sided. This way you do a task/quest or fight an encounter and on the other side is the item you found. It makes for awkward card handling and less repeatable future game plays (you’ll know if a task is worth the effort).

The game requires you to take on one of the familiar Warcraft classes and each class gets a host of skills/spells to help it along. Unfortunately, some classes just play better on this ruleset than others. This makes for lopsided games rather quickly.

The theme of Warcraft highlights the best of intentions and the worst of gameplay. The board is sectioned off into levels. Green for beginners, yellow for harder, red even harder and so on. Because of the size of the board, there are only a few spaces you can move that will be ‘green’ level when you start. A few bad encounters early and you are stuck pinned in. If you can’t beat the level boss to move to the next tier, it is miserable.

The game truly feels like warcraft in theme. They did an awesome job of tailoring game mechanics to board mechanics. It just does not have the fun element. It is interesting as a game conversion, but fails as a game.

Remember our quirky friend from Christmas 2008, the ever-memorable Jolly Ol’ Saint Arthalas? Just in time for the push into Icecrown Citadel, he’s back with the premiere of his pumping new music video, Get Lich or Die Tryin’. “This track is so ice cold, it’s going to be measured in Kelvin,” claims creator Adam C. Beamish (aka Althallen of US Executus). “The Lich King isn’t alone, either. Flanked by the two baddest emcees in all of Northrend and backed by a room full of zombies, this is the Lich King like you’ve never seen him before.”

Feeling the beat? WoW.com is giving away two of the T-shirts worn by Arthas’ emcees in the video. Check out our separate giveaway post for a chance to win a “Get Lich or Die Tryin’” or “Saurfang & Putricide …” boss names T-shirt, and follow us past the break for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this Arthravaganza.

Admit it: You thought murlocs were spineless little critters, didn’t you? Take a peek inside our gallery, below, and you’ll see that even this sweet little fellow boasts his share of backbone — literally. World of WarCrafts visited with Bradley Barger (aka Monmanteau of US Stormreaver), one of the winners of this year’s WoW Holiday Dessert Contest, for a taste of the inspiration behind his winning creation. What we discovered beneath this little guy’s skin (a backbone of steel!) was more spine than we ever expected from a murloc.

The creation is based around a metal armature, which Bradley covered with cereal-based cake and butter cream, then finished with fondant for a smooth texture. The spines are made from colored sugar, melted and cut to shape. The pond water is fashioned from a high-temperature molten sugar mixture, poured it into a frame of fondant.

Continue past the break for an interview with Bradley on how he cooked up this sweet success.
