PvP Q&A with Blizzard’s Cory Stockton

Filed under: Blizzard, PvP, Interviews, Battlegrounds

Blizzard’s Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton answered quite a lot of questions about the upcoming PvP changes in Patch 3.2. There are a lot, particularly the experience gains in Battlegrounds which also has deep implications in PvE as players can simply toggle experience gains off (any Level 60s up for Molten Core?). It’s a pretty lengthy interview and Stockton goes into detail with the new Isle of Conquest Battleground. Some highlights from the chat:

  • Experience gain in Battlegrounds is slightly slower than questing or grinding
  • Players can toggle experience gain on and off with a mere 10 Gold
  • There are plans to include greens and “the occasional blue item” at the end of each Battleground match (!) but won’t make it to Patch 3.2
  • The Isle of Conquest is in the Frozen Sea, North of Icecrown
  • Objectives in Isle of Conquest are captured exactly like flags in Arathi Basin — I totally called this wrong when I said it would probably be a numbers and proximity thing
  • Battlemaster Achievement isn’t likely to change (whew!) but Blizzard is considering what to do with the Achievements for the Isle of Conquest
  • Rated Battlegrounds are coming. Not quite soon(R), but an announcement will be made during BlizzCon
  • Blizzard plans “to deliver more Battlegrounds to the players as often as we can”

Oh, man. That last bit made me want to change my underwear. Blizzard is actually paying attention to Battleground enthusiasts, realizing that while Arenas are nice and all, a lot of players love the BGs, too. New Battlegrounds “as often as we can?” Yes, please! Head on over to the official site to read Stockton’s interview in full. Bombs, cannons, parachutes, angry Generals… 3.2 is shaping up to be one explosive patch, indeed.

a new 5, 10, and 25 man instance to WoW, and usher in a new 40-man battleground called the Isle of Conquest. WoW.com will have you covered every step of the way, from extensive PTR coverage through the official live release. Check out WoW.com’s Guide to Patch 3.2 for all the latest!

Christie Golden signing Saturday in Long Island

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Events, Fan stuff, Virtual selves, Blizzard, Interviews

Christie Golden (who, you’ll probably remember, wrote Arthas, the book our guys loved so much) will be signing copies of that book at a bookstore called the Book Revue in Huntington, NY this Saturday at 7pm. In a quick interview with Newsday there, she also talks about both her background in fantasy and sci-fi (she remembers the days when sci-fi and fantasy were seen as silly diversions rather than premises for multi-million dollar movies and videogames, as do most of us older nerds, probably) and her experience with WoW. She says that having the chance to jump in and virtually visit the actual setting of her books is a real plus when doing research — if she has a question about the layout of Stormwind, she can go over to that city and check it out herself.

If you’re in or near Long Island and are a Christie Golden fan or are looking for something Warcraft-y and fun to do on Saturday, there you go. She’s got more information on her blog about the signing (looks like she’ll be reading as well). If you do go, let us know how it went.

15 Minutes of Fame: Druid at the decks

Filed under: Features, Interviews, 15 Minutes of Fame

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes - from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

Did you know that players on Argent Dawn-US have their own soundtrack? Fellow AD player Aspeth — aka DJ Aspeth of Sao Paulo, Brazil - has been posting trance mixes on the AD forums since she was a lowbie DJ still spinning her first talent points. Now, she jet sets from continent to continent (hope the screenshots for this profile make it in before she hops her next plane for Europe; if you don’t see them, you’ll know why!) to mix it up for a ballooning fan base entranced with the Aspeth sound.

Her fans on Argent Dawn are both vocal and loyal. “Thanks for the new mix! I’ve been a huge fan of yours for years,” posted Athraku. She repays that following by dropping by the AD forums with a sample of her latest work. “Whenever I can, I share a mix in the forums,” she says. “I haven’t been able to do it monthly lately, but I try to at least once every two months or so.” When you get a look at Aspeth’s wicked schedule, you’ll wonder how she ever finds time - but find it she does, as well as carving out a few moments to keep her little Druid soaking up the sounds (and sights) of Azeroth.

The World of Warcraft Two-Sided World Map 24″ X 32″

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

More than just a map, this giant lay of the land is a work of art. At 24″ x 32″, this two-sided map makes a great wall hanging in any room. On one face, the map shows all flight paths, including the Horde, Alliance, Neutral and Druid-only travel points. On the flip side is an unfettered map of Azeroth displaying a beautifully rendered view of the topography of the islands. In the World of Warcraft, knowing where you are and where you’re going is a matter of life and death.

Customer Review: HMMMMM?
It is a map Of the OG WOW….But it does look too much like a com. map and not an awesome laminated double sided map of Azeroth!Look at the curser for gods sake!!

Now, I ordered 4 of these. I didn’t notice an address error, so I never received them. I tried to contact him, and never got a response. I actually had to file an A-Z file claim to get my money back. HORRIBLE customer service. When you order, be CAREFUL. This seller will NOT help with any problems you get while trying to get this.
And, yes, I know, I screwed up my address, but the fact is he gave HORRIBLE customer service; None.

Customer Review: Terrible!

15 Minutes of Fame: WoW 101 — yes, WoW for college credit

Filed under: WoW Social Conventions, Virtual selves, Features, Interviews, 15 Minutes of Fame

World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes - from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

WoW.com’s Adam Holisky has been itching to take a WoW course for quite a while now — so Adam, this 15 Minutes of Fame is for you. While some people still don’t get that playing WoW doesn’t lead to becoming a college dropout, there are plenty of others who recognize the game to be a rich resource not only as entertainment but even as a venue for anthropological research.

And now, this: “Warcraft: Culture, Gender and Identity,” a credit-awarding class being offered at Inver Hills Community College in Minnesota. At the helm of this innovative course is Landon Pirius, Ph.D., also known as Nodnal the Gnome Warrior of Blackwater Raiders-US. No stranger to the convergence of WoW and academia, Dr. Pirius wrote his doctoral dissertation on “Massively Multiplayer Online Virtual Environments: A Potential Locale for Intercultural Training.” We didn’t go quite that deep in this interview; we simply visited with him about his wildly successful college course and how it’s helping shape modern educational methodologies.

And before you ask — yes, Dr. Pirius returned the answers to our interview questions in impeccable outline form.

World Of Warcraft Burning Crusade Collector’s Edition

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade returns you to Azeroth for incredible role-playing action! Several years have passed since the Burning Legion’s defeat at Mount Hyjal. With renewed strength, the heroes of the Horde and Alliance have begun to explore new lands and broken through the Dark Portal to investigate the realms beyond the known world. Will these heroes find friends or foes? What dangers and rewards lie in wait beyond the Dark Portal? And what will they do when they discover that the demons they thought vanquished have returned to renew their terrible Burning Crusade?

Special Collector’s Edition includes: “Art of the Burning Crusade” book, exclusive in-game pet and behind-the-scenes DVD. Also includes World of Warcraft Trading Card Game starter deck and exclusive cards, mouse pad with map of Outland & official soundtrack CD. Hundreds of new monsters, quests, and items A new profession - Jewelcrafting Ride flying mounts in Outland

Customer Review: Love this Game WOW
This is a very awesome game. You do, need to be carefully, of too much play. It is a virtual reality game with, it seems, never ending realms. You can chat and also play the game which is not too bad. I am 45 and female and it takes a little time to learn but wow lol WOW it is a WOW game lol for a chat / combat game. You need to try it before you knock it……

Customer Review: All that AND a tiny pet
I got this copy to get the free non-combat companion pet, the netherwhelp hatchling. He is SO adorable… and every single character you create or transfer to this account will get one. You can also transfer characters off that account and they will keep the pet (warning, transfer is $25 each and can not be transfered again for 30 days). To transfer a character from one account to another the name on both accounts must be the same, so don’t think you can sell characters with this pet attached to anyone willing to pay.

What I didn’t expect (because I didn’t read the product description) was the book of artwork… it’s gorgeous! It also comes with a soundrack (music you hear in the background) but if you are level 40 and lower, most of the music will be unfamiliar… perhaps I’ll hear more of it when I get to higher levels. There are also cards from the card version of the game… and quite a few, at that… a mousepad with a map of outlands on it and a DVD of how the scenery and characters were “created”… all in all, this is a pretty cool set.

Warlocks! Once weekly, Nick Whelan delves into the despicable underbelly of Dalaran to consort with cabalist casters, who help him channel Beelzebub into a fresh Blood Pact.

When I first took over this column, I remember discussing with several people my worries about the content I wouldn’t be able to provide. At my best I’m a casual raider, and my PVP experience is limited to that time I did With a Little Helper from My Friends. Certainly I’m passionate about the class, can write better than a few other people I’ve seen published, and usually play enough to have some Warlock-specific ramble prepared every week. Still, I wanted to find some way of providing content for PVP oriented locks that they would at least find entertaining–even if it was simply footage of me getting one-shot by a level 75 tree Druid.

Then last week one of my readers left a comment suggesting I find a kickass PVP Warlock and interview them. The next few hours are kind of a blur. I remember banging my head against the wall a couple times, and waking up in a hospital, but that’s not important.Interviewing a Warlock skilled in PVP could make for some interesting column content. So, I went to the armory to do some hunting.
