While wandering about the floor at BlizzCon, I stopped over at the TokyoPop Manga booth and spoke a bit with editor Troy Lewter, who we’ve talked to before.. Currently, the big series they write for the world of Azeroth is the Warcraft Legends series, which is on its 4th volume with a 5th due out next month.

Talking with Troy and other members of the Tokyopop team at the booth, what I was most struck with was the passion for the work and the universes of Blizzard’s games that they display, and, perhaps more importantly, to the art and stories they tell.

Troy laid out three important concepts that they follow in creating the mangas: Telling a solid story, focusing on a few characters, and cross-pollinating with other forms of media.

In telling a solid story, the aim is to create the story such that you don’t need to rely on the Warcraft world and characters, per se. In short, even if the story wasn’t about Thrall or Varian or the Scarlet Crusade or anything else, you could still connect with the characters themselves.

In this era of Match.com and eHarmony, it’s not so unusual to have married friends who met online. Couples tie the knot with elaborate in-game weddings. The taste for WoW-themed wedding cakes grows every year. Wedding rings unite lovers in Azeroth and the world at large.

So it’s no surprise that 15 Minutes of Fame would eventually roll around to the story of a couple who met and fell in love inside the World of Warcraft. Meet Ghrelsognn and Aleiriella of Defiance on Farstriders-US. Ghrel and Aleir are no starry-eyed youngsters - both in their 40s, they found themselves mesmerized by love when (and where) they least expected it. Join us for the story of their walk up the levels and down the aisle, in their own words, after the break.

Encrypted Text: Patch 3.2.2 updates and BlizzCon news

Filed under: Rogue, Classes, Interviews, (Rogue) Encrypted Text, Cataclysm

Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the Rogue class. This week, we talk about the Rogue news from Blizzcon and the latest PTR build.

Due to a bit of luck on BlizzCon ticket day, I was able to score a pair of tickets for one of this year’s most desired events. I had a great time at the WoW.com reader meetup, and getting the opportunity to play as both a Goblin and Worgen Rogue really highlighted the weekend for me. I’m also excited at how Diablo III and Starcraft II are coming along; I am eagerly awaiting their releases.

However, it wasn’t all fun and games. I had serious business to attend to, I had to use this opportunity to spend time with the WoW developers and ask some of the more important questions facing Rogues today. During the 2nd Class Discussion Panel, I got the opportunity to ask Ghostcrawler one question in front of the crowd. What’d I ask? About Vanish, of course! As expected, there’s no timeline for a possible fix, but they don’t want us to have to wait until Cataclysm for our most unique defense cooldown to provide more reliable protection.

15 Minutes of Fame is WoW.com’s look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes — from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

Forget the Brothers Karamazov. If you’re looking for artistic expression, passion and the bonds of brotherhood — plus a healthy dash of World of Warcraft — it’s all about the Brothers Kasprzak. Evan Kasprzak, a Top 6 finalist in the reality show So You Think You Can Dance, has gamed his entire life with brothers Ryan (also a top finisher in this year’s SYTYCD show) and Ian. There’s no denying how tight this trio is. One viewing of Evan and Ryan’s journey through the beginning of this season’s SYTYCD competition as a team (see video, above) or a glance at photos of the threesome with their matching wrist tattoos (”brother” in Greek) show the obvious depth of their bond. And so while Evan is socked in right now beneath the insane pace of the competition’s home stretch, we snuck in a visit with Ian to find out how the family finds a foothold to fit all the pieces together.

For the gaming, dancing Kasprzaks, support from family includes the WoW family. “In top 6, you can use all the support you can get,” Ian notes, “and I know how amazingly supportive the smaller WoW community on my server has been. I also love how WoW.com highlights the multidimensionality of gamers. I think it helps break down some of those stereotypes that gaming is somehow isolating and anti-social, when it is very much a social medium. … Sometimes, the person behind that Mage that just Frostbolted you might just be someone climbing up their way to the top as America’s next favorite dancer.”

Filed under: Fan stuff, Blizzard, Interviews

Jay Harding from ESL TV was able to catch up to Blizzard Lead Designer and the resident PvP guru Tom Chilton at the World of Warcraft Arena Tournament Regional Finals in Cologne, Germany last June and got to squeeze a decent length interview. Because of the focus of the event, Chilton talked a lot about PvP changes, particularly the impact of the upcoming Patch 3.2. Chilton, also known as Kalgan, expressed Blizzard’s intent on trying to keep different comps viable while taking small steps to curb the dominance of extremely popular comps such as RMP and cleave, which he stopped short of calling a “faceroll comp” (still goes to show he was thinking it, though!). Highlights from the video include:

  • Resilience - the change to Resilience in Patch 3.2 will make the greatest impact in Arena PvP, slowing down matches and likely impacting the effectivity of “burst” comps.
  • The nerf to the 2v2 bracket is intended to equalize class representation since 2v2 isn’t always a good bracket for all classes. Chilton mentions that “as the bracket size comes down, you lose a lot of those different synergies between different classes”
  • Chilton says, “there’s room for competitive Battlegrounds,” and that “rated Battlegrounds is something that (Blizzard) has been thinking about for quite a while.” He says they’ll provide more information in the future.
  • Isle of Conquest is intended to be epic, they want to “bring back a little of that crazy, big battle feel” and intergrating some features of existing Battlegrounds with new ones.
  • Kalgan and his girlfriend will kick your butt in 2v2.

It’s a nice interview for ESL’s WoW Wednesdays, and while it doesn’t give too much information we don’t already know (especially since you obviously read WoW.com…), it’s always good to hear news straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth. This actually got me all excited for the PvP Panel during BlizzCon, hopefully we’ll hear a bunch of new stuff there.

Scattered Shots: Hunter Q&A Part 1

Filed under: Hunter, Patches, Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, Interviews, Forums, (Hunter) Scattered Shots

Good day folks and welcome to Scattered Shots. The column that takes a good look at what it takes to be a Hunter in the World of Warcraft. I am Eddie “Brigwyn” Carrington from the Hunting Lodge. This week we’ll be reviewing the recently released Hunter Q&A.

Hunter Q&A was like the other Class Q&As, a mixed bag of frustration, tease, and interesting concepts. It shouldn’t be a surprise that we didn’t get the details we wanted. Nor should it be a complete shock to you that some Hunters would feel disconnected between what players want versus what the Developers are concentrating on. Given all that, I still felt that this Q&A was overall pretty decent.

There is so much to review and discuss I’ve decided to break the Q&A out into 2 parts. Here’s a quick highlight of the main things discussed in Part 1:

  • Developers feel Survival Hunter spec is currently performing within normal operating parameters.
  • Crowd Control still needs work.
  • PvP has a big influence on PvE Class Balance
  • Ammo remains a consumable because of technical difficulties.
  • Ammo is a focus point on Hunter damage progression.
  • Blizzard is hoping to cut the cost of Ammo to address the cost burden for Hunters.
  • The Hunter “No Fire” zone will remain in effect.
  • Development considers enhancing Hunter melee attacks.

All that is just in Part 1! So let’s see what Ghostcrawler had to say.

Dan Jolley talks about TOKYOPOP’s Death Knight manga

Filed under: Blizzard, News items, Expansions, Interviews, Death Knight, Comics

Things have been a little bit quiet on the manga front, but not for long. Warcraft Legends editor Troy Lewter has pinned down Dan Jolley, writer for the forthcoming Thassarian-centric volume Warcraft: Death Knight, and posted the interview with him on the official TOKYOPOP site.

To be fair, the interview is not as focused on the manga as the one we did with Jolley a couple of months ago but it does look at how writing for the anthology volumes of the series compare with a longer story. Lewter also quizzes Jolley about how he got into the business and the last question about sharks and bears is also worth the read alone.

For those waiting on the release of Warcraft: Death Knight, it might give some new insight into how manga happens. Don’t forget, you can also check out our interviews with both Dan Jolley and Troy Lewter.

BlizzCon 2009: WoW.com interviews Felicia Day, continued

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Virtual selves, Humor, Interviews, BlizzCon, Cataclysm

That’s the last money question that I have. You work with all of these actors, the first season it was like you were kind of the face of the show, and you were talking to everybody, and the other actors have kind of come up. And this BlizzCon I think is one of the first ones where people are really diving in and saying this person is my favorite, I really want to talk to Robin, I really want to talk to Jeff. You wrote the stuff, you even talked on the panel as well about how the actors are kind of taking over your characters. How has that been, in terms of how your actors are becoming the characters you’re writing about?

As of the third season, I’ve written them hundreds of pages, at this point. So they’ve as actors really helped me define, it’s kind of a metamorphosis. Every TV show, if you watch a pilot, a lot of characters change a lot, from the time they do that first pilot. For this one, the actors though, they bring so much to the table, Jeff and Sandeep do a lot of improv, and ad-lib a lot, they’re adding a lot of ideas with their characters. At the same time, honestly, I’ve been pushing them forward as far as press and stuff and meeting fans and stuff, because I’m out there on the Internet a lot, I get sick of myself, honestly, I’m sure some of your readers are like, “I hate this girl.”

[Laughs] No! They do have trolling tendencies.

Which is cool, they will, but that’s cool, everybody doesn’t have to love me. [laughs]

World of Warcraft Horde Leveling Guide

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

World of warcraft is the most largest and most successful Online game to date. Although it is easy for most too pick up and play. There are certain elements that could make it not so easy to understand and/or enjoy. This guide is here to offer people an idea how too level from level 1 to 60 with little time compared to months that it could take if you did not have this guide.

Customer Review: Waste of money
My 9-year-old who has recently gotten very interested in World of Warcraft ordered this book in hopes of obtaining some secrets or tips about how to get his characters to a higher level quicker than usual.
Instead, this book seems to be an almost incomprehensible series of charts detailing what quests should be taken in what order. However, there is no written explanation of how to accomplish these quests or even how to use the book. Neither my son nor myself (although I must admit I am not very familiar with WOW) were able to make head or tail of any part of this book. As far as we can tell, there are no tips or tricks included.
Perhaps if you’re an advanced WOW user you might understand this book, but my guess would be if you’re an advanced WOW user, you probably wouldn’t need this book in the first place.
Save your money.

Customer Review: A complete waste
Not worth the paper it is printed on. Poor print quality, no detailed directions or explanations, and not all classes included. Looks like something a 10 year old would put together.

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes - from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

I really can’t think of a more enjoyable way to game than in the same room as your friends. Even back in the EverQuest era, when my husband’s Monk and my own Magician actively avoided one another outside of raids (incompatible characters, incompatible playstyles - we couldn’t have been a worse mix), we got plenty of kicks and giggles from keeping an eye on one another’s screens. These days, raid nights at our house mean not two but four players (three in my office, one upstairs - more, if friends with laptops are here). AFK breaks spawn a queue at the fridge that inevitably coalesces into a rowdy debate over the evening’s tactics and drops.

So when I spotted these kindred spirits in a news tip from Khaz Modan-US, I knew I’d found a group of players who could show WoW.com readers the glories of playing in the same room. “We’re a group of eight friends in real life that get together once a week for what we call ‘Craft Dinner,’ which involves lugging all our gear to one of our houses, sharing a meal together, then hitting up a 10-man raid (we PuG the last two to three spots, generally),” wrote Stumpsky. “Last night, we just cleared 10-man Naxx for the first time — which was a big accomplishment, as we just started to raid as a full group at the beginning of May. We don’t use Vent, because we’re all in the same room, and we all find it the most enjoyable way to play the game we love.”

I have purchased this hoodie for my son and he loves it. This hoodie is made to size, but not really thick. He loves to wear it everyday. I think the hoodie is made well and attractive not tacky.
