a new Blizzcast, in two parts. In part one, Karune of the Starcraft community team interviews Chris Metzen, Rob Pardo, and Samwise Didier about the history of Warcraft as a whole (it’s celebrating the 15th anniversary as well this year), and part two has our friend Nethaera talking to J. Allen Brack, Tom Chilton, and Jeff Kaplan about the game itself. As is usual with the official podcast, there’s not much new information here (especially if you’ve already read through some retrospective press), but both interviews are worth a listen (and/or a read through the transcript) if only to hear these guys all in a room together, joking around about old times.

Elsewhere on the site, they’ve started posting written interviews as well. The first one is with Shane Dabiri, former lead producer on the game, and there are faded-out spots for J. Allen Brack, Tom Chilton, and Jeff Kaplan as well. The other spots aren’t revealed yet, but they’re supposed to be interviews from the “community,” so it’ll be interesting to see who those turn out to be. Blizzard, anytime you want to chat with me about the history of World of Warcraft, just drop an email!

WorldofWar.de (who were listening live to the podcast this past weekend) recently got an interview done with Lead Designer Tom Chilton, and you can read it over on their site right now. There’s not a lot of news in there (though Chilton does gush over the Dungeon Finder, just as players have for the past week or so), but aside from the usual player housing deny and the old “we don’t know what the future holds” back and forth, but there is one fun thing he reminds us of in the second half of the interview: Blizzard is adding on to the old Blackwing Lair instance in Cataclysm. It sounds like kind of what they’ve done with VoA: Blackrock Caverns, which we heard about at BlizzCon, will be a new area (supposedly level 85 5-man, though Chilton says “lots of bosses”) inside Blackrock Mountain that’s connected to all of the Black Dragonflight bosses in Blackwing Lair.

Finally, Chilton sorta-kinda re-confirms that there will be a new content patch before the expansion — he says it probably won’t be a numbered patch like 3.4 or 3.5, but he says there may be some more class balances in there, new Battle.net features, and possibly even a new raid boss. But mostly it’ll just be the patch that brings us all of the world events previous to the Cataclysm shakedown that we’ll all go through. Sounds like fun.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com’s Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW’s third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it’s all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

15 Minutes of Fame is WoW.com’s look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes — from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

Sorry, no typos in the headline. It’s not the pie meme that’s the topic of today’s 15 Minutes of Fame. (You’ll have to turn elsewhere for your just desserts.) We really do mean pi — you know, 3.14159 … We’re not quite sure how pi and WoW go together. And frankly, neither are players on US Llane, where the mysterious Pi Guy holds court in Trade. “He’s in Trade chat spamming pi and other fascinating formulas, like how 99.9 = 1,” writes our tipster, “which makes sense after he shows you the steps … which he does. He’s got top-of-the-line gear, which in itself is a nice thing. But on top of that, he’s a math genius. A very mysterious math genius.”

We suppose community fascinations have formed up around more bizarre memes than pi. But a mysterious mathematician lurking in Trade? How could we allow this stone to remain unturned? Without further delay, we offer up for your consideration the curious tale of Gauss, the Pi Guy.

Is there such a thing as retirement guilds for burned-out players? When Sharaya and Boltac of Vanguard of Norrath spotted that innocuous question on the Blackwater Raiders realm forums, they recognized a familiar face: their very own guild. A collection of former hardcore gamers from the EverQuest era, VoN has become home base for a more casual approach. “We’ve all done the hardcore raiding thing, which comes with wanting to see everything and do everything in a high-content mass online game,” explains VoN officer Sharaya. “We all have had our stints with guilds sporting the usual raid schedules, leveling needs, gear requirements and members constantly preening about scores from tertiary web sites with convoluted ranking systems. In the beginning, we all did this as a choice. It let us see everything, and let’s face it — it was fun.

“But as in most games with such demands, many good players get burnout,” he continues. “They don’t tire of the game; they tire of the routine. They tire of ‘having’ to log in to make events or risk /gkick. They tire of the constant fighting over drops and arguing about who gets invited to what. The game ceases to be a game and becomes a chore. It truly is a ‘daily.’ What we realized is this is not a fault of the game; it’s a fault of the guild you’re in.”

So they created Vanguard of Norrath to offer a refuge from the grind, a place to indulge what Sharaya calls “the ability and know-how to blitz most anything we wanted but … on our schedule, at our pace and without any pressure.” The big surprise? How many other players have been attracted to VoN for exactly the same reasons.

When there’s a dozen of Them for every one of You, life on a PvP server gets ugly. PvE progression crawls when your faction’s population is so minuscule that you can’t seem to assemble a PUG even during peak hours. You can’t craft your way into better gear, because an anemic economy means no materials on the Auction House and no players in Trade waiting to craft with them. Log in on a night when the few of raiding guilds don’t happen to be active, and you could find yourself looking at something like 40 other faction-mates online.

Welcome to the Alliance of US-Cho’gall. Current player activity levels average an abysmal 1 Alliance hour for every 12.7 Horde hours played — something like a 1:7.5 player ratio, down from 1:15 earlier this year. An incredible community effort and guild named The Resistance rallied rerollers and transfers to infuse new life into the Alliance-side of this notoriously imbalanced community. While the campaign made an impressive stab at pulling the Alliance community up by its bootstraps, the severity of the situation took its toll, and things are not so bright for everyone on the blue side of the tracks. We visited with Aleksey, GM of another Alliance guild, to find out how the beleaguered Allies are holding up and what might help this Horde-crushed realm.

Blizzard developers to speak at GDC 2010

Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, CA. WoWs former Lead Producer Jeff Kaplan, a.k.a. Tigole, presented the keynote speech at last year’s GDC, and this year two top developers will be on tap to give horribly esoteric panels.

Brian Schwab, Blizzard’s Senior AI/Gameplay Engineer, will be presenting a lecture on AI architecture …

“AI programmers rarely use a pure architecture such as a State Machine, Planner, or Behavior Tree in isolation. Rather, several symbiotic architectures are mashed together, resulting in an overall architecture that is unique and powerful in its own way. This lecture is designed as a series of three mini-lectures where you will hear about several mashed up AI architectures along with intriguing lessons and insights.”

… and Erin Catto, Blizzard’s Principle Software Engineer, will be presenting a workshop on physics engines.

“This one-day tutorial continues the 10-year tradition of the Math for Programmers and Physics for Programmers tutorials by bringing together some of the best presenters in gaming physics. Over the course of a day they will get programmers up to speed in the latest techniques and deepen their knowledge in the topic of physical simulation.”

More information, including panel times and availability, can be seen on BlizzPlanet’s writeup of the announcement. This is basically total nerd talk — it’s very unlikely that we’ll have any new WoW-related info from these panels, unlike Kaplan’s keynote, but anything is possible. We’ll keep you posted.

IgroMir 2009: Cataclysm panel recaps

Filed under: News items, Expansions, Interviews, Cataclysm

I touched on Blizzard’s presence at IgroMir 2009, sort of the Russian E3, a bit previously, specifically about J. Allen Brack’s panel regarding guild progression and leveling in Cataclysm. Of course, I had to Google-translate the panel from Russian (nyet, I do not know Russian, comrades), and not everything Blizzard-related from the whole convention was in the recaps I read.

Thankfully, Blizzard themselves have released their own recaps of the Cataclysm panel. In his talk, Brack discussed rated battlegrounds, Tol Barad (briefly), and guild progression. It turns out that I was pretty thorough in the guild leveling post, but here’s the stuff I didn’t cover:

  • Rated Battlegrounds will be an alternative way to gain Arena points for those who prefer large-scale PVP.
  • Your personal rating gain for a win will vary depending on the specific Battleground.
  • There’ll be featured Battlegrounds each week with bonus rating gain for wins.
  • You will not lose points or rating for a Battleground loss.
  • Arena points can be used to purchase pets, mounts, vanity items, and perhaps best of all, the old honor system PVP titles like Grand Marshal.
  • Tol Barad will provide bonus daily quests and instances for the faction that wins the battle for the zone, somewhat like, as Brack put it, a cross between the Isle of Quel’Danas and Lake Wintergrasp.

You can check out our previous IgroMir post here, or read Blizzard’s official recap on their IgroMir site.

Tom Chilton talks about the in-game pet store

Filed under: Items, Blizzard, Making money, Interviews

The guys over at The Instance podcast got a chance to talk to Blizzard’s Tom Chilton about the recent decision to sell in-game noncombat pets for real money, and the interview is now up in the latest episode on their site. He talks first about the pets’ development, and it sounds like they designed the pets thinking they’d be sold on a real-money store eventually. He says the price point was “arrived at by trying to figure out what it would have to be to make sense for us to spend time working on it.” And he mentions the TCG and their loot prizes — he says those were meant to be a bonus, and they ended up being a roundabout way for players to buy pets anyway, so Blizzard decided to go with this more direct plan.

He doesn’t say much about the future, but he does say that Blizzard is planning on doing some “pet and plushie” deals, where you’ll be able to buy a plushie from the Blizzard store, and get an in-game pet with it. For the game specifically, he mentions the guild transfer service that’s coming (we heard about that back at BlizzCon — you’ll be able to server transfer an entire guild rather than do it account-by-account), but otherwise he tells players that the pet store is just a “side project” — right now, it’s not taking away from development at all, and if it does grow, Chilton says Blizzard would hire more people rather than using current developers. We’ll have to see what happens in the future.

Blizzard unveils anniversary minisite

Monday wasn’t only the fifth anniversary of World of Warcraft, it also kicked off the 15th anniversary of the Warcraft property at large (which makes sense — you might remember that the original WoW intro started off with “Ten Years of Warcraft“). And so Blizzard has created a brand new minisite to commemorate the occasion — they’ve got a full video interview with many of the staff members (no women, though, Blizzard — what’s the deal there?), and there are other Blizzard and community interviews coming as well. They’ve also got a feature called the “Battlecry Mosaic,” in which they’re inviting fans to take pictures of themselves showing Horde or Alliance pride with printable logos, which will then be assembled into a mosaic of up to 20,000 pictures. That should be a sight to see — it’ll eventually all be posted online, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like it at the next BlizzCon also. Neth also says that whoever reaches set limits on pictures will get a faction exclusive piece of art revealed. Sounds fun.

I thought for a moment that this was what the Warcraft twitter account was referring to the other day, but they specifically said whatever they were talking about would be revealed on 11/25, and obviously that’s still in the future. So we’ll have to see what else appears this week. Still, the minisite is an excellent homepage for Blizzard’s look back at their first and biggest franchise. Especially if you’re a Warcraft fan, it’s a must-see.

Potential character model revisions in Cataclysm

Filed under: News items, Expansions, Interviews, Cataclysm

WoW’s fifth anniversary and the interviews surrounding it have ended up providing us with some previously-unknown tidbits of information — which is a good thing, especially when it comes to stuff we’ve been wanting to hear about for a long time.

This particular tidbit comes from the Warcry network interview with J. Allen Brack and Samwise Didier about the game’s anniversary, and it’s about a subject near and dear to our constantly-complaining hearts: new character models. They might even be coming in Cataclysm.

Says Brack:

“Even though things would be better with new (character) models, we’d probably spark a lot of player outrage. So we’ve talked about giving players a choice between the classic models or the new ones, but it might not be something we want to take on at the same time as we remake Azeroth.”

That’s pretty big news.

Censorship is fun!
Hey guys, heres a new Third Faction comic for your brain organs to digest. I figured it was about time to address this whole “censorship” in gaming issue by illustrating it in a humorous, comical, manner. Whether or not its humorous or comical is up for debate; but the issue itself is addressed. Enjoy! TTF - Manhunt 2 -MaTT
