Starcraft II: WIngs of Liberty site has been revamped, blurbs about the mobile Authenticator and the Armory app, and some calls to buy their merchandise.

More interesting for WoW fans, though, is an interview with Scott Mercer (Daelo), WoW’s lead encounter designer, and Greg Street (Ghostcrawler), a crab who needs no introduction. They discussed the arc of Arthas and the Lich King from Warcraft II through World of Warcraft (congratulations again to Blood Legion on their 10-man world-first).

Please note that here there be spoilers for some details about the Arthas fight, so stay away if you want it all to be a surprise.

The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator to interview some of the top Arena fighters on the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Frostwyrms. We’re especially focused on the people who play these games, to further shed light on the world of the PvP player. If you’d like to be interviewed for The Colosseum, please feel free to contact us — be sure to include your armory as a link!

This week, we interviewed a four-time rank one gladiator, Athlete of Mug’thol. The Merciless, Deadly, Furious, Relentless Gladiator talked to us about his very interesting and uncommon 3v3 composition of mage-warrior-holy paladin, as well as some basic arena advice for new PvPers.

WoW.com: You have four rank one titles! It’s probably safe to say you know what it takes to be successful in arena. What’s your advice to players who want to start playing arenas for the first time?
Athlete: My best advice would be to register an account on ArenaJunkies.com and read it often. There are many kinds of people on that website that would gladly go out of their way to help you out. They also have a really good recruitment tool to find teammates. Find some players that are on your skill level and build up a good friendship and some synergy with them. Make sure your setup can work and play often.

WoW.com: What do you think about warriors getting Disarmed while Bladestorming?

*OP WoW Alliance Players Guide (World of Warcraft the Roleplaying Game)

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Customer Review: Warcraft Alliance Players Guide
The book has a great range of new character directions, from expanding the ones that are already existant to complete new prestige classes,(i.e. Savagekin and Ursa totemic)The book contains great story lines and together with the history of the races of the Alliance it provides a big content to a new campaign hosted in the world of Azeroth. For the experiences players it is a great addition, certainly for the ones that like just a tad more diversity then the main world of warcraft rpg book already has to offer.

World of Warcraft Programming: A Guide and Reference for Creating WoW Addons

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

WoW” is what you’ll say when you see how many ways you can tweak the World of Warcraft interface after you read this book! If you’re new to programming, we’ll teach you the basics of Lua and XML and walk you through writing your first addon. If you already have some original addons in your arsenal, jump right into Parts III and IV and work with templates, function hooking, custom graphics, state headers, and more. We’ll even help you distribute your addons, making WoW better for everybody.

  • Respond to events, creates frames, and use the WoW API to interact with the game
  • Learn the Lua programming language through interactive examples, from values and variables to custom functions and control structures
  • Write well-formed XML and validate using schemas
  • Find specific functions easily in the comprehensive references of APIs, API categories, events, and widgets
  • Create custom graphics, scroll frames, dropdown menus, and much more

A Note from the Publisher:

In the first printing, we mistakenly omitted the Authors’ Acknowledgements, which included the names of many World of Warcraft community members who helped bring this book to market.  I want to publicly thank them for their efforts, and apologize for the omission, which will be corrected in the second printing.

It is the members of the WoW community that make Blizzard’s amazing game an even greater experience for millions of players around the world, and their efforts on this book are greatly appreciated.

Chris Webb
Executive Editor

From the Authors:

James and Lee Whitehead, thank you for standing behind me on everything that I’ve done throughout my wacky life. None of this would have been possible without the guidance and support that you’ve provided me. Michelle Hastings, thank you for finding a way to bridge a 5300 mile gap and still make me feel like I’m in your living room. Robert and Gregory Whitehead, thank you for sticking by me wherever I am and whatever I do without ever passing judgment. Tom Harper, thank you for letting me be a part of your life. Every single day with you is an adventure I can’t wait to begin, and you have changed my life forever.

Jamie Anderson and Edward Wilman, thank you for letting us invade your sanctuary and for being such good friends. Charlie Radcliffe, Björn Alfthan, Anne Christianson, and Chris McCabe, thank you for being great flatmates. Worcester College MCR, thank you for giving me a community of friends in a very foreign land.

Karen Hobson, thank you for being so helpful and supportive throughout the last two projects; you’ve helped keep me afloat. Sam Lantinga, thank you for all the time and effort you put into helping the World of Warcraft community. Kevin M. Kelly, thank you for your odd sleep patterns and availability; exploration of the unknown is always easier when you have a friend with a map. Daniel Stephens, thank you for your help digging through various parts of the API and for giving me a good jumping-off point for my data exploration.

Chris Webb, thank you for bringing this book and Hacking World of Warcraft into existence. Both books serve as great resources for the WoW UI community. Maryann Steinhart, thank you for your guidance through the entire process. Your feedback, as always, has proved instrumental to the process. Matthew and Bryan, for working with me on this extremely ambitious project, it’s definitely been a rollercoaster.

Thanks to everyone who kept me moving when I needed a push, and those who slowed me down when I needed a break. Thank you to all of my users for putting up with bugs and lack of updates while the book was still being written; your patience and support is what keeps me writing addons. Finally, thank you to all the members of the WoW UI community for everything you do.–Jim

First, I would like to thank all those involved with the book: Jim for inviting me to take part; Bryan for sticking with it through all his work pressures; Chris, Maryann, and the rest of the folks at Wiley for allowing this project to materialize. Thanks to Rick and Stephen for picking apart our work. Supreme thanks go to Iriel, AnduinLothar, Cladhaire, MentalPower, Esamynn, Beladona, Krka, Legorol, Shirik, Cidan, Kevin, Sam, and all the members of #wow-lounge for putting up with our incessant questions. Thank you to all the folks who helped us churn out the API docs at the 11th hour.

Thank you to PepsiCo and Rockstar, Inc., without whose caffeinated beverages I never would have completed my chapters. I’d also like to thank whoever made the massage pad I keep on my computer chair. The best go out to the folks behind “Brisco County Jr.,” “Firefly,” and every other television series that should’ve gone on for years. For entertaining me in my few breaks, xkcd.org, bash.org, Portal, World of Warcraft, “Bones,” “Nip/Tuck,” and “Mythbusters” have my undying gratitude. What thanks for a book of this nature would be complete without recognition of Blizzard for its wonderful product and incredible passion?

Special thanks go out to my de facto colleagues from the UI & Macros forum for their hard work, dedication, and flaming of people who didn’t read the stickies while I devoted my time to this project: Troodi, the nicest troll I’ve ever met; Jelly, enthusiastic ForumToCPoster user; Kamdis, female Draenei—@@’nuff said; Lunessa, my no. 1 supporter for my presidential bid; Lopeppeppy, whose name I can finally type from memory; Kaydeethree, with the best diagram of how to find stickies ever; Kelfarr, under people’s skin before he even posts; Alestane, unnervingly patient; Valaron, never met a better Orc; Lealla, yay drood!; Aella, whom I always confuse with Lealla; everybody else whom I forgot to name; and our Administratrix Extraordinaire, Cairenn, for holding everything together!

My deepest thanks go to my family for making me who I am, and, most important, to my wife, Juliella, thank you for supporting me in this endeavor even when it meant I had to put you on /ignore from time to time.–Matthew

Wanda and Joe Newman, for the hours you put up with me not being willing to get off the computer. Thanks for all the support over the years, and for buying me my first copy of VB when I was 15, and sorry for all the arguments. Willis McLemore, thanks for supporting me without ever expecting anything from me.

Brent Miller, for helping me really start out on this awesome journey. You helped guide me when I first got started doing WoW addons, and many of the things we talked about helped shape me as a professional coder. Thanks for the first versions of Ace and for shrugging off all that responsibility onto me when you left. Oh, and thanks for listening to me rant.

Jim Whitehead and Matthew Orlando, you have been better co-authors than anyone else can ask for. Thanks for putting up with me while I learned how to do this, and for handling the content that I had no clue about. Sorry again for the times when I got overwhelmed. Thanks to all the editors and support from Wiley for helping me get through this, and for putting up with me when I gave you problems.

PProvost, Ammo, Cladhaire, hyperChipmunk, kergoth, Mikk, Nargiddley, pastamancer, nevcairiel, Tekkub, Tem, vhaar, Wobin and the members of #wowace. Thanks for the ideas, inspiration, strife, and hard work. Thanks for helping WowAce grow to more than a million users and for all the great mods!

Shirik, Tekkub, Wobin, Mentalpower, Esamynn, Cide, Ammo, Nevcairiel, and Iriel (and any I have accidentally forgotten). Thank you for helping so much on the reference. We would never have been done in time without you.

Karen Hobson. You’ve been a friend to me during some of the darkest times in my life, and I’ll always treasure your company and support. I don’t think it’d be possible for me to thank you enough.

Aidan McLemore, who still thinks Daddy can do anything. Last, but by no means least, Kristina McLemore. Thanks for believing in me and following me across the country, for always loving me, and for helping me but, most important, for not divorcing me during the production of this book.–Bryan

A special thanks is owed to a group of hard-working members of the user interface community, without whom the reference section of this book would not have been completed. Each of you truly stepped up when we needed your help, and we’re extremely grateful for everything you’ve done for us. Thank you [Ammo], Beladona, Cide, Gazmik, JoshBorke, MentalPower, Nevcairiel, Shirik, Tem, and Wobin for giving us your time, and a little bit of your sanity.

Dan Fernandez, thank you for your work on the World of Warcraft AddOn Studio and your help in writing Chapter 14. We’re hopeful that the software will continue to develop and mature as another tool in the addon author’s toolbox.

Customer Review: Not what I was hoping for.
An ok book if you are into this sort of thing…

The WoW game itself is pretty restricted it what it will allow you to do programming wise; consequently this book is pretty limited in what you can do with it…

I enjoyed the information in the book; however, I didn’t find much practical use for it - other than intellectual…

MJL

Customer Review: Wonderful book!
I’ve been struggling to write an add-on for World of Warcraft, and have mostly been using the WoWWiki site with various other framework sites to learn. While those resources have been pretty helpful, this book has provided a clear, concise explanation of Lua and the WoW API that is unrivaled. In the week that I’ve owned it, I’ve been able to accomplish more with my own add-on than ever.

“I can’t handle it when people say, “It’s only a game,’” says Amy “Valkyrie” Brady, a WoW-playing, card-carrying member of Ubisoft’s well known Frag Dolls all-female gaming team. This all-business gamer has helped create and lead the a multi-platform clan of more than 300 gun-toting women who compete across five FPS (First Person Shooter) games in 10 separate divisions. In December 2006, Valkyrie was part of the four-member Frag Doll team that took first place in the Rainbow Six Vegas tournament at CPL in Dallas. Rainbow Six 3, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Halo 2, Final Fantasy XI … On top of considerable hours spent on weekly practice for the Frag Dolls, she puts in some 50 to 60 more in personal game play — and among those games is World of Warcraft.

DKs are OP — there, we said it. Now then, we can move on with our discussion of … well, of an OP death knight. This particular DK, however, brings more to the plate than the sheer muscle of his class. Raegwyn of EU Zuluhed-H brings a wealth of raiding experience, class skill and game savvy to bear in his continuing campaign to conquer as many bosses and instances of WoW as possible, completely solo.

We get a lot of “check me out soloing X” videos submitted here at WoW.com, but Raegwyn caught our eye with his video of a solo kill of Al’ar from Burning Crusade’s 25-man Tempest Keep instance The Eye. He’s made masterful headway in heroic Pit of Saron and most recently polished off an instance that still catches level-appropriate groups off guard: heroic Ahn’Kahet. We talked to this Austrian death machine about why gear is nice but timing is everything when it comes to taking down bosses on your own.

Today’s interviewee is Jeebeez, current holder of 1st place in US-Whirlwind’s 3v3 bracket. He plays a somewhat unusual composition of restoration shaman-frost mage-shadow priest. We thought it’d be interesting to ask him a few questions about arena and his 3v3 team.

WoW.com: What’s the most impressive thing you’ve ever done as a restoration shaman in arena? Don’t be modest.

Jeebeez: I 2v3′d Worlds team back in season 6 playing restoration shaman/rogue. Also, we just recently had a pretty sick kill on a warlock (playing WLD). We killed the pet, switched to warlock. I shocked Fel Domination, blanket silence into another shock on Fel Domination into death of the warlock. That was when I had about 30 ms though (almost no lag). Restoration shamans are about consistency more than anything, so its probably more important to be consistent with shocks/grounds/heals/Purges than it is to pull something crazy off.

WoW.com: Why did you choose to play your 3v3 team makeup over other possible compositions?

Jeebeez: Well, I’ve tried comps like RLS (rogue-warlock-shaman) and warlock/mage/restoration shaman (wizard cleave or spell cleave) and have found the skill cap on wizard cleave just isn’t that high on live. RLS has a steeper learning curve than shatterplay (frost mage-shadow priest-restoration shaman) but I lacked the people to play with. I guess I play shatterplay because I enjoy the switch coordination and the high damage output it does.

Remember our quirky friend from Christmas 2008, the ever-memorable Jolly Ol’ Saint Arthalas? Just in time for the push into Icecrown Citadel, he’s back with the premiere of his pumping new music video, Get Lich or Die Tryin’. “This track is so ice cold, it’s going to be measured in Kelvin,” claims creator Adam C. Beamish (aka Althallen of US Executus). “The Lich King isn’t alone, either. Flanked by the two baddest emcees in all of Northrend and backed by a room full of zombies, this is the Lich King like you’ve never seen him before.”

Feeling the beat? WoW.com is giving away two of the T-shirts worn by Arthas’ emcees in the video. Check out our separate giveaway post for a chance to win a “Get Lich or Die Tryin’” or “Saurfang & Putricide …” boss names T-shirt, and follow us past the break for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this Arthravaganza.

Filed under: Interviews, 15 Minutes of Fame

15 Minutes of Fame is WoW.com’s look at World of Warcraft personalities of all shapes and sizes — from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, from the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about.

Who’s the oldest player you know? WoW’s player base is so immense today that most of us know someone over age 50 who plays. These older folks most often turn out to be friends-and-family style players, tucked away among other family members — grown sons and daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews — using World of Warcraft to connect with family members across the generations and the miles. Finding an older player who’s come to the game on his own terms can be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

When we finally got wind of septuagenarian player Loyal Leitgen, we knew we’d found a player who could give us a fresh perspective on the older player’s point of view. He hadn’t been introduced to the game by the younger generation — in fact, he’d been the one to usher his grown sons into the game. The problem was, we couldn’t interview him until we could catch up with him. When we fired off our first e-mail, he’d just left the United States and was bound for Switzerland. We finally tracked down the energetic retiree in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he was visiting one of his sons who was working on an international business venture. We chatted with him on Skype to learn why the 76-year-old gamer thinks WoW offers something for everyone.

The World of Warcraft Two-Sided World Map 24″ X 32″

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

More than just a map, this giant lay of the land is a work of art. At 24″ x 32″, this two-sided map makes a great wall hanging in any room. On one face, the map shows all flight paths, including the Horde, Alliance, Neutral and Druid-only travel points. On the flip side is an unfettered map of Azeroth displaying a beautifully rendered view of the topography of the islands. In the World of Warcraft, knowing where you are and where you’re going is a matter of life and death.

Customer Review: HMMMMM?
It is a map Of the OG WOW….But it does look too much like a com. map and not an awesome laminated double sided map of Azeroth!Look at the curser for gods sake!!
